Thanks for opening today's Inside Streaming brief! New releases always slow down around this time, so the few weeks around the holidays and New Year's are a great opportunity to catch up with streaming content that I missed over the previous year. The best thing I've caught up with this season has been "Bodies" on Netflix, a sci-fi mystery based on a classic graphic novel that plays a lot of the usual time-loop kind of games, but in an intriguing and dramatically satisfying way. (Stephen Graham's performance here is pretty terrific.) I also enjoyed Netflix's action-comedy series "Obliterated," from the "Cobra Kai" gang, more than I expected to based on its meathead premise. It has some fun turns from some fresh faces, and just the right balance of wit and raunch. Hope you've been having a restful holiday season. Enjoy today's issue! Lon p/lon-harris | |

4 | Bloomberg's Screentime newsletter notes that Netflix significantly slowed its rate of new content production in 2023. The streamer released around 130 fewer programs in 2023 than the year before, based on data from the tracking site "What's On Netflix." More: - The decrease in output was consistent across just about every major genre and programming category.
- Though Netflix claimed that the Hollywood strikes did not significantly impact its production schedule, output dropped more steeply in the second half of 2023 than the first, consistent with the industry as a whole.
- The slowdown doesn't appear to have significantly impacted Netflix's overall business; the company still added 16 million new subscribers in the first 9 months of 2023.
